Barbara Elizabeth Benway, 81, passed away at home in Jay on Sunday, August 22, 2021.
Barbara was born in Lake Placid, New York on December 22, 1939 to Ted and Caroline (Strock) Cave. She grew up in Lake Placid and graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1958. As a young girl, Barbara skated in Lake Placid Ice Shows and loved playing the piano, her favorite songs were any related to the Waltz. As a child, she was a member of the girl scouts and loved to ride her bike. Earlier in life she was a member of Adirondack Community Church in Lake Placid and later she received the Sacrament of Baptism at Holy Name Church in Au Sable Forks.
Later on in life she loved to square dance, and that is where she met her husband, Paul. Barbara and Paul married on September 20, 1958 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid and they lived a very happy life together for 62 years, raising their six children in Jay. When not raising her children or taking care of the family, she loved canning and baking; she was thrilled when she could work in the garden and her flower beds; and, she volunteered at Holy Name School
She is survived by her husband Paul; children Christopher, Christina (Timothy) Oshier, Christal (Don) Yando, Carol LaPorte, Paul (Carol), and Timothy (Cathy); 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her daughter-in-law Kimberley Benway, son-in-law Richard LaPorte, and great-grandson Noah Boettcher
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Church, with burial to follow at Holy Name Cemetery in Au Sable Forks. There will be no calling hours.
Donations may be made in Barbara's name to the Au Sable Forks Volunteer Ambulance Service and can be mailed to Zaumetzer Funeral Home, PO Box 127, Au Sable Forks, NY 12912.
