Bessette

United Church of Christ
10:00 - 11:00 am (Eastern time)
Dawn Michelle Bessette, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister, passed away at the age of 58 on April 16, 2026, following a brief but fierce three-month battle with stage IV pancreatic cancer.
Dawn's life was a testament to resilience, courage, and unwavering determination. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, she faced challenges from the very beginning. As a child, she endured countless fractures and spent much of her early years in hospitals-but she was never alone.
At her side through every break, setback, and long hospital stay were her devoted parents, Cherie Grahm Martin and Charles Martin. Together, they surrounded Dawn with constant love, strength, and protection during her earliest and most difficult years. Cherie offered fierce, unwavering care-comforting her through pain, advocating for her, and giving her a deep sense of safety. Charles provided steady, quiet strength, bringing calm reassurance, encouragement, and enduring pride in his daughter. Together, they created a foundation of love and stability that shaped Dawn's resilience and carried her through childhood challenges, helping her face life with courage and grace.
At the very center of Dawn's life was her beloved husband, Todd William Bessette Sr., whose love and devotion never wavered. From the moment they met at the Essex County Fair in Westport, New York-when Dawn was 16 and Todd was 18, a humble "farm boy" who never believed he'd have a chance with her-he loved her with a depth and steadiness that only grew stronger with time. Through every season of life, he stood faithfully by her side-not just as a partner, but as her protector, her comfort, and her home. His devotion was evident in every small act of care and every quiet sacrifice. Especially during her illness, he remained her unwavering anchor until the very end. In the gentle rhythm of everyday life, he was there with her in the mornings, sharing coffee and companionship-simple moments that reflected a deep and enduring love.
Dawn was also a loving sister, cherished deeply by her siblings and family, with bonds rooted in childhood memories, loyalty, and enduring connection.
She was a woman of simple, beautiful joys. Dawn found peace in quiet mornings with a warm cup of coffee, often shared with her husband by her side. She had a deep love for flowers in bloom-each one a reminder of life's quiet beauty. She adored birds and all animals, finding comfort and wonder in their presence. Her compassion extended into her work at the Essex County Public Health Department, where she dedicated 30 years of service to Essex County. Over those decades, her work became more than a career-it became a place where she built lasting bonds and lifelong friendships. Among them was her dearest friend, Linda Beers, a connection that grew far beyond the workplace. Their friendship deepened over the years through shared moments at work and genuine support in each other's personal lives, built on trust, laughter, understanding, and a steady presence through both everyday life and its more difficult seasons.
Dawn also carried a deep and lasting bond with her extended family, including her cousin Nikki Ives, who held a very special place in her heart. Nikki was not only family, but also one of Dawn's closest companions and dearest friends. Their connection was built on love, laughter, and a shared understanding that made their bond feel unshakable. Nikki's passing was a profound and heartbreaking loss for Dawn, leaving a space that was deeply felt in her life. She carried Nikki's memory with her always, speaking of her often and holding onto the love and closeness they shared. It was a loss that remained tender in Dawn's heart, and one she carried with enduring love and sorrow.
In her heart, Dawn often dreamed of a life in paradise-somewhere by the shore, basking in the warmth of the sun and listening to the gentle rhythm of waves meeting the sand. That vision of peace stayed with her-a place of rest she carried quietly through every season of her life.
Throughout her life, Dawn moved forward with determination, never allowing her condition to define or limit her. She defied every expectation placed before her. Doctors once believed she would not be able to have children, yet Dawn became the proud mother of two sons-Nathan Charles Bessette and Todd William Bessette Jr.-her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. Her life was filled with quiet victories that spoke volumes: walking, staying active, and living fully and independently for as long as she could.
She stood faithfully by her husband through every chapter of the life they built together, including their years on the dairy farm-a place that became deeply woven into the fabric of their shared story. Dawn grew to love the steady rhythm of farm life: the quiet promise of early mornings, the familiar routines, and the sense of purpose found in working the land and tending to the animals. There was a simplicity and honesty to those days that she held close to her heart. She met each season there with quiet strength and a sense of belonging, embracing the life they were building side by side with grace, devotion, and enduring love. That passion followed through into Todd's love for cars. Together they shared many afternoons cruising around in their Stingray Corvette, basking in the sun, where Dawn was truly at peace.
Dawn is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Todd William Bessette Sr.; her sons, Nathan Charles Bessette and Todd William Bessette Jr., their partners, Alexander James Hanzley and Kai Scarangella; her father, Charles Martin; her sisters, Misti Jo and Naomi; her beloved aunt Faye Ives; Mike and Marsha McCaroll; Tina Brant; her cousins, Melissa LaMotte and Tommy Grahm, Heidi Ives, Amanda Jean; her nieces and nephews, Jamie, Jonathan, and Ashli and many extended family members and dear friends who will carry her memory forward. Dawn is preceded by her beloved mother Cherie Grahm Martin, her childhood brother Charlie Martin, her great grandmother Cora Lashway, her grandmother Gene Grahm, her cherished cousin Nikki Ives, her uncle Loyd Grahm, her cousin Gary John Grahm.
She will be remembered for her perseverance, her gentle but determined spirit, her warmth, her humor in the face of hardship, and the deep love she gave and received. Dawn's story is one of defying the odds, of grace in adversity, and of a life lived with meaning and courage. She leaves behind a legacy of strength and love that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 10:00 at the United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown with a Celebration of Life reception following at the Wooden Nickel.
