Gertrude
McMurtry Marvin
May 21, 1940 — Jul 15, 2026
Gertrude Honor McMurtry Marvin, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, left us on July 15, 2026.
Known to everyone as Trudy, she grew up riding her ponies as an only child on a farm off the Elizabethtown-Wadhams road, the daughter of Harry McMurtry and Beatrice Taylor McMurtry.
Trudy was a great lover of all nature, of antique hunting, and of the cats that she rescued throughout her entire life. She was always up for any walk in the woods, and often found a special rock to bring home to her gardens.
Trudy helped her husband, Walter (Smit) Marvin Jr., to run the family's funeral home and furniture store in Elizabethtown for decades and, in a second career, worked for the Elizabethtown Community Hospital for over 25 years - well into her seventies. Though divorced long ago, Trudy and Smit maintained an abiding friendship and regard for each other to her final day.
The centerpiece of Trudy's life was her three children: Angela Marvin (Michael Dunsmore), Edgar Marvin (Beth Drummond), and Walter Marvin III (Margot Roemischer); and her grandchildren Benjamin (Kristy Santana) and Louis Scaglione (Evan Zhang); Courtney (Paula Drassinower) and Kelsey Marvin (Neil Brown); and Brock and Connor Marvin. She has five great-grandchildren who never failed to bring a smile to her face: Reece, Rivi, and Bodhi Brown, and Carolyn and Josephine Scaglione. Trudy also held a special place in her heart for her former daughter-in-law, Darlene Mitchell, and her former son-in-law, David Scaglione.
Donations in Trudy's memory may be made to North Country SPCA, Crane Mountain Valley Horse Rescue or High Peaks Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on September 18, 2026, with time and place to be announced.
Services were entrusted to Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, PO Box 127, 3 College St., Au Sable Forks, NY 12912.
