Mary Barrie

November 11, 1950 — January 13, 2024

Mary Elizabeth Barrie passed away on January 13, 2024. Mary was born in Plattsburgh, NY on November 11, 1950 to William Barrie and Emily S. Barrie of Jay, NY. She was the first of four children. Mary graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor's degree in Art History followed by a Master's degree in Library Science from the State University of New York at Albany. She went on to work as a law librarian at Albany Law School and for several Los Angeles law firms.

Growing up in the Adirondack Mountains gave Mary an appreciation of nature and nurtured her love of animals, especially dogs and horses. In 1982, she moved her family to Southern California and then to the foothill community of La Canada in 1988. Because Mary was a country girl at heart, she fell in love with the trails and open space in La Canada and volunteered for over 25 years to preserve the trails there. She was recognized for her efforts during her lifetime and after her death.

As Mary grew older, she longed to spend more time in her hometown of Jay. As a result, she and her husband, Ted, spent half their time in Jay most years and all of their time there during the pandemic.

Mary loved to hike in the Adirondacks. She took special pleasure in the first scenic overlook on the Jay Mountain trail, with its view of the ski slopes of Whiteface Mountain. Her love of nature led her to be very supportive of conservation efforts in the Adirondacks led by the AuSable River Association, the Adirondack Land Trust, and the Adirondack Conservancy. In lieu of flowers, Mary's family asks that donations be made to one or more of these organizations.

Mary is survived by her husband Ted Stork, her daughter, Emily Stork (Clement), brother, Edward "Ed" Barrie, and sister, Emily Barrie. Services will be held on Friday, June 28 at 3 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Au Sable Forks for Mary and her brother, Willie Barrie, who died just a week after she did.
