Obituary

Paul J. Benway, 88, of Glen Road, Jay, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, at Plattsburgh Rehab surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 26, 1937, in Jay, NY, the son of the late Wyman Benway and Nina (Hathaway) Benway.

Paul graduated in 1955 from AuSable High School. He married the late Barbara Cave on September 20, 1958 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. They were married 62 years.

Paul worked for many area businesses: North Country School, AuSable Valley Telephone Company, Edmonds Construction, Town of Jay (Assessor), NYS Department of Transportation and Northern Orchards. Paul retired from the NYS Department of Transportation in 1993. Paul spent 26 retirement years caring for his wife, Barbara, until her death on August 22, 2021.

Prior to his wife's disability, he served at Holy Name Church as a member of the Parish Council, Eucharistic Minister and a Labor Day volunteer. He loved working in their vegetable gardens and flowerbeds. He also had a firewood business where he sold firewood to many people in the area. Paul enjoyed living on the Glen Road, with his wife, and enjoyed their beautiful view of Whiteface Mountain for many years. He and Barbara also enjoyed square dancing throughout the years.

Paul is survived by his six children: Christopher, Christina (Tim Oshier), Christal (Don Yando), Carol LaPorte, Paul (Carol Greenley), Timothy (Cathy). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and 1 future great grandchild in June 2026; his sisters: Hazel Teriele and Harriet Rasco; his brothers: Norris (Judy), Robert, Alan (Marla).

Paul was predeceased by his wife, Barbara; daughter-in-law, Kimberley Benway; son-in-law, Richard LaPorte; and great grandson, Noah Boettcher; his siblings: Helen (Jim Flynn), Hilda (Vaughn Hathaway), Lional (Emmy) Benway; brothers-in-law: Bernard Teriele and Marshall Rasco; sisters-in-law: Helena Benway and Maura Benway

We want to thank Dale Walton for giving communion to dad at home. We also want to personally thank the staff at Plattsburgh Rehab for their wonderful care and kindness towards dad. They were exceptional.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations made to the Upper Jay Fire Department, Jay Fire Department, Wilmington Ambulance, and the AuSable Ambulance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Church in Au Sable Forks with burial to follow at Holy Name Cemetery.
