Roy V. Whitaker, better known as Jay, age 76, formerly of Edmeston, NY and most recently of Harrisville, NH, passed away on October 24, 2024 due to health complications including pancreatic cancer.
Born on February 5, 1948, in Annapolis, Maryland, Jay grew up in Edmeston, NY, as the son of Catherine (Aloi) Card and Douglas Card. He graduated from Edmeston Central School in 1966, where he excelled as an athlete, earning accolades in both football and wrestling. Jay was also a talented musician playing the saxophone and drums throughout high school and beyond.
After graduation, Jay served his country in the Army from 1968- 1971, including combat duty in Vietnam. He proudly served in Special Forces, Green Beret Division and received numerous honors, including three Bronze Star Medals, an Army Commendation Medal and completion of the Airborne Course.
Following his military service, Jay pursued a career in culinary arts, working as a distinguished chef in Boston, MA. He later became the food service director at Dublin School in New Hampshire, where he dedicated himself to enriching students' lives through thoughtfully prepared meals tailored to their preferences. His genuine care and concern for the students earned him their deep appreciation. In retirement, Jay worked at a local hardware store and sought out volunteer opportunities, reflecting his desire to help others.
An avid reader and outdoor enthusiast, he especially enjoyed fly fishing. Those who knew Jay admired his gentle nature and cherished his friendship.
Jay was predeceased by his mother, father, sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Alan Sheldon.
He is survived by his life partner, Marie Gill, and her children Jason and Rachael; his sister Angela Benson and her children Matthew (Kathryn) Card, Jason (Lauren) Card, and Jim Benson; his sister Phyllis (Ladd) Lawrence and children Hannah (Oisin) Kelly, Bianca (Zachary) Sloan, and Gabe Lawrence; and Kathleen's children Caprice (Paul) Eckert and Monica (Brandon) Clark; as well as his great-nieces and nephews, cousins and aunts.
A Graveside Service will be held in the Spring in Edmeston, NY where he will be afforded military honors.
