Shirley Martha Lawrence, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on June 2, 1949, in Albany, NY, Shirley was commonly known as Shirley Bell to those who knew and loved her best. She spent her life in service to her family and community.
Shirley dedicated over 30 years of her career as an accountant for the Town of Wilmington, a role in which she demonstrated remarkable commitment and diligence while managing the town's finances. In addition to her professional accomplishments, she was an active member of the Wilmington Fire Department for over 30 years, contributing her finance skills and support to the community she cherished.
A passionate gardener, Shirley took pleasure in cultivating her plants and making her beloved homemade horseradish. She specifically enjoyed the moments spent on family vacations, traveling with her children and creating lasting memories together. Her creative spirit was evident in her love for crocheting and cross-stitching, a cherished tradition she maintained for each grandchild upon their birth. An avid reader, Shirley found joy in romance and crime novels and had a special affection for dogs, integrating them into the fabric of her family life.
Shirley is survived by her three sons, Scott (Heather) Lawrence, David (Sabrina) Lawrence, and Dewey (Tiffany) Lawrence. She also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Christopher, Courtney, David, Zachary, Jamie, and Spencer, as well as a great-granddaughter, Lydia Lawrence.
Family and friends are welcome for calling hours at Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM on May 16, 2025. A Memorial Service will take place immediately following at the funeral home. A Graveside Service will be held on May 17, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Haselton Cemetery.
Shirley will be remembered for her kindness, her community spirit, and her deep love for her family. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Shirley's memory to the Wilmington Fire Department, a testament to her dedication to community service.
